National player Satou Sabally got off to a perfect start with the Dallas Wings in the WNBA and made her first double-double of the season. The pro-league basketball team won the Seattle Storm 95-91, with Sabally recording 17 points and ten rebounds. At the start, the Wings had beaten the Atlanta Dream (85:78).
Against Seattle, champion of 2020, Sabally from Berlin played a good 32 minutes on Friday (local time) and convinced again. The 25-year-old had collected a strong 25 points against Atlanta last week. Alongside the Connecticut Sun (3-0) and defending champions Las Vegas Aces (2-0), Dallas is the only undefeated franchise.
“She’s having fun. And she’s playing with tons of confidence, knowing this is an important year for her. She’s embracing that,” said head coach Latricia Trammell.
Sabally is not playing for the German national team this year and will therefore miss the upcoming European Championships in Israel and Slovenia (June 15-25). She wanted to give her body the chance to play through a summer with the Wings and then negotiate “the best possible contract,” she said in January.
Sabally, who played for Fenerbahce Istanbul during the WNBA break and won the Turkish championship and the EuroLeague with the club, is only tied to Dallas until the end of the season.
Her younger sister Nyara still has to wait for her WNBA debut. In the first two games of the New York Liberty, the 23-year-old was not part of the squad. Nyara Sabally was drafted by the club in 2022 but missed last season with a knee injury.
