The Boston Celtics have officially promoted Joe Mazzulla from interim coach to head coach. The 34-year-old also extended his contract with the NBA record champion. The details of his new contract are not known.
“Joe is a tremendously talented coach, and he has proven that,” Celtics President Brad Stevens said in a statement Thursday. “He has a unique ability to engage those around him. We are very grateful for the work he has done in getting us to this point and excited that he is ready to lead us into the future.”
The Celtics promoted then-assistant coach Mazzulla in September after head coach Ime Udoka was suspended by the club for the entire 2022-23 NBA season for “violating team policy.” Boston is the best team in the league with 42 wins and 17 losses.
